Introduction
Did you know that since November 2018, Medical Cannabis has been legal and available for private prescription in the UK?
Medical Cannabis prescriptions are currently issued by specialist doctors and can only be considered for patients who have exhausted all traditional methods of treatment for range of indications such as:
- Pain conditions – chronic pain, rheumatoid arthritis, Ehlers Danlos syndromes, fibromyalgia, chronic regional pain syndrome, migraines, cluster headaches, neuropathic pain, palliative care.
- Psychiatric conditions – attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, autistic spectrum disorder, Tourette’s syndrome, insomnia, anxiety, agoraphobia, depression.
- Cancer – cancer related appetite loss, anxiety, chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting, cancer related pain, depression, palliative care.
- Gastrointestinal conditions – Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome.
- Neurological conditions – autistic spectrum disorder, epilepsy (adults / children), migraine, cluster headache, multiple sclerosis, neuropathic pain, Parkinson’s disease.
Unlike over-the-counter CBD food grade products, medical cannabis can contain levels of both THC, CBD as well as any other naturally occurring cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids. Treatment is prescribed to meet the individual needs of the patient and where there is clinical evidence to support its need.

Are you eligible for a consultation?
In order to access medical cannabis treatment in the UK, a patient must be deemed eligible for a consultation by their prescribing clinic. Before completing a full assessment, Curaleaf Dispensaries have provided some standard criteria to determine how likely you are to be eligible:
- You must have tried two traditional forms of treatment for your condition
- You must not be pregnant
- You must not have a history of schizophrenia or psychosis
- You must be able to either provide or give access to your summary care record (SCR) from your GP
- You must be aware that you are paying for your appointments and prescriptions
If you meet all of this standard criteria, it is highly likely you will be eligible, however you must still complete a full referral to confirm this.
Understanding the costs
In the UK, regulations stipulate that medical cannabis treatment is currently not covered by the NHS and therefore patients must pay for treatment at a private clinic. It is important that patients understand the costs associated with referring to a private clinic and how Curaleaf Dispensaries can help with reducing some of that cost.
- Initial Appointment – £50
- First Follow-Up Consultation – £0
- Repeat Prescription Fee – £0
- Quarterly Check-Up – £50
From year two and beyond, some patients will move to two appointments per year, reducing the cost of clinic fees over time.
The cost of your private prescriptions dispensed from Curaleaf Dispensaries vary and will be dependent on your condition and individual circumstances. Speak to your local pharmacy if you have any questions about the cost of treatment.
