Did you know that around 1 in 5 UK adults live with hearing loss?
*Source: RNID prevalence estimates using Office for National Statistics population data (2018).
With rising headphone usage, common misuse of cotton buds, and a general lack of routine ear care, this number is expected to grow. Whether the hearing loss is short-term or permanent, its effects are far-reaching.
A world-first in ear and hearing care
We use the innovative Tympa system, which is the first device of its kind to bring together three vital ear care tools in one compact, portable unit.
This cutting-edge technology allows trained professionals to carry out a full ear health assessment in under 30 minutes, including high-definition ear inspections, safe wax removal, and hearing evaluations.
Expert-led Ear Care from accredited practitioners
All procedures are performed by trained practitioners who have completed the TympaHealth course, accredited by the British Society of Audiology (BSA) and the British Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists (BSHAA).
As certified Tympa users, they are fully qualified to carry out otoscopy and microsuction on adults aged 18 and over.
When to get your ears checked
There are a range of signs to watch out for which could indicate someone has an ear or hearing problem:
Look out for the following signs, which may suggest ear or hearing issues:
- Reduced hearing
- Ear pain or discomfort
- Unusual discharge
- A sensation of fullness in the ears
- Ringing or buzzing sounds
- Itchiness
- Dizziness or unsteadiness
- Persistent coughing
- Needing the volume higher than usual
- Struggling to hear people clearly
- Asking others to repeat themselves
- Finding it difficult to focus on conversation
Any of these symptoms could indicate a change in ear health, and it’s important not to ignore them.
Why taking care of your hearing matters
Healthy hearing is vital at every stage of life. When our hearing declines, it can make everyday interactions more tiring and isolating, and over time, this can lead to withdrawal from social activities.
While we routinely visit opticians and dentists, our ears are often neglected.
Yet untreated hearing issues can have a significant impact, including a higher risk of falls, social disconnection, and are now recognised as the top preventable risk factor for dementia.
Ear wax
Ear wax (also known as cerumen) is a natural substance created by glands in your ear canal. It keeps the ears lubricated and protects against bacteria.
However, wax can sometimes build up and cause problems like hearing loss, pain, itching, discharge, dizziness or unpleasant smells.
Microsuction
Microsuction is a safe, gentle, and highly effective way to remove ear wax.
What is microsuction?
Using a low-pressure suction device and a fine probe, microsuction removes wax and dead skin without touching delicate areas like the eardrum.
The procedure is carried out using the Tympahealth system, which provides a clear, magnified view of the ear canal to ensure precision and safety throughout.
Benefits of microsuction
Microsuction is considered the safest and cleanest way to clear ear wax. It’s fast, minimally invasive, and usually requires just one session.
Most people find the experience more comfortable than alternative treatments, and side effects are rare.
Pre-treatment
Though microsuction works even on firm wax, it’s most effective when the wax is softened in advance. We recommend using 1-2 sprays of olive oil in each ear, twice a day for 3–5 days before your visit.
This makes removal easier and more comfortable.
Please note: If wax is too hard due to lack of preparation, we may not be able to proceed – and a charge may still apply.
Your microsuction appointment
Your session includes a full review of your medical history and a close-up inspection of your ears using a specialist microscope. Once suitability is confirmed, you’ll be asked to sign a consent form.
After the procedure, you should experience clearer hearing and improved comfort.
Aftercare
No follow-up is necessary unless advised. You can return to your normal routine immediately after treatment.
Cost
Fees for consultations and treatments are listed on our booking page.
Please be aware that cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance or missed appointments may be charged in full.
Frequently asked questions
How do I access Microsuction services?
We offer microsuction on a private basis, or via the NHS if referred by a GP or ENT department.
NHS wait times can be lengthy, but private appointments are often available within the same week at our Oxgangs, Dunfermline, and Glenrothes locations.
Is Microsuction better than syringing?
Yes. Microsuction is more precise and significantly safer than water-based methods like syringing or irrigation.
Where syringing uses water pressure – which can push wax deeper or risk infection – microsuction gently removes wax with direct visual guidance, avoiding potential complications.
Will Microsuction hurt?
Most people feel no pain, though the procedure can be noisy – often compared to a hand dryer.
If you’ve had a recent ear infection or used drops beforehand, you may feel mild discomfort.
How effective is Microsuction?
In nearly all cases, 100% of the wax is removed in one session.
In some cases, 90-95% of wax is removed, but this is still a sufficient success to restore hearing loss occurring because of built-up ear wax.
Some wax may remain because it is too hard, impacted or close to the eardrum to remove safely. Wax that remains in the ear canal may be successfully treated with the continued use of olive oil after the procedure, where it will likely resolve of its own accord.
Is Microsuction safe?
Yes. It’s the safest method currently available for wax removal.
Although rare, minor side effects like temporary ringing, slight soreness, or minimal bleeding may occur. These will be discussed with you beforehand.
Will Microsuction restore hearing loss?
If your hearing loss was caused by ear wax, then yes – you can expect to regain full hearing post-treatment.
If your hearing was affected by another cause, you may need further investigation.
How often is ear wax removal via Microsuction required?
It varies per person. Hearing aid users may benefit from wax removal every 4–6 months.
If you regularly produce excess wax, consider treatment every 3–6 months.
How long will the appointment last?
Typically, the full session – including assessment and treatment – lasts between 20 and 30 minutes.
What age is Microsuction suitable for?
We currently offer microsuction to adults aged 18 and over.
