Why get tested?
A CCA Adjusted Calcium test provides a more accurate picture of the body’s active calcium levels by correcting the total calcium value for albumin, an important protein that affects how much calcium is “free” versus protein-bound in the blood. This test is especially useful when albumin levels are abnormal, such as in liver disease or malnutrition, because total calcium alone can give a misleading result.
People may need adjusted calcium testing when they have symptoms of high or low calcium—such as excessive thirst, constipation, muscle cramps, tingling sensations, or irregular heartbeat—or when doctors are diagnosing and monitoring conditions affecting the kidneys, liver, thyroid, parathyroid glands, and bones. It is also important in the management of diseases like osteoporosis, pancreatitis, and certain cancers, and is routinely used to check treatment effectiveness in patients taking vitamin D or medications that affect calcium balance. Because it provides a clearer indication of physiologically active calcium, the CCA Adjusted Calcium test is often included in routine health assessments to help detect underlying disorders and guide accurate diagnosis and treatment.
