Introduction

Metoclopramide Hydrochloride is a dopamine antagonist with gastroprokinetic and antiemetic properties. It is used to treat sickness and vomiting. This medicine treats vomiting by affecting receptors in what is referred to as the chemoreceptor trigger zone.

Metoclopramide tablets are taken orally. The medicine content of each tablet is 10mg. Patients are generally instructed by their doctor to take it for 4 to 12 weeks only. It should not be taken in excess of the amount recommended or for more than 12 weeks due to the risk of serious side effects related to movement, which may be permanent.

Patients who take Metoclopramide might notice some side effects, such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Urination changes
  • Inflammation of the breasts
  • Sexual function difficulties
  • Difficulty sleeping properly

You must tell your doctor about all side effects which occur during the course of treatment with this medication. Consult your doctor straight away or visit the hospital if you experience stiff muscles, difficulties related to speaking, visual disturbances, shaking which you cannot control, fever or any other serious reactions that have not been listed here.

Treatment with this medicine may put the patient at risk of developing a condition called tardive dyskinesia, which can cause uncontrolled muscle movements. In some cases, it may even continue after treatment has stopped. This is more likely if it is taken for an extended period of time. Do not administer the medicine for longer than your doctor recommends and seek medical attention immediately if any uncontrolled movements occur.

If you experience vomiting while taking this medicine, tell your doctor.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you suffer from any allergies.
  • If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
  • If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
  • If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
